| Editorial Reviews:
Product Description The Automatic Self explores the reasons for our behavior from the perspective of the behavioral sciences and neuroscience combined. It sees the reason for much of our suffering grounded in the automatic mechanisms of the brain and how they dominate us until we mature enough as social organisms to become highly self-aware and learn to direct and control them through positive effort. This book further offers to make available to the reader the latest neuro-technologies that can help us transform ourselves. Through enhanced self-awareness training and the social accuracy that results from such training we can move into a life where we can successfully access the social resources we need to thrive as individuals and move beyond individual transformation and into the fulfillment of self-transcendence.

| Customer Reviews: An outstanding guide. Simple and powerful.book . October 2, 2006 Richard C. Crane (New York) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I was delighted to read Dr. Soutar's book as it provides an insight into aspects of neurofeedback that are unfortunately much neglected in the numerous books pubished so far. I speak with at least some authority as I have been deeply committed to the field of neurofeedback for the past 38 years, have trained thousands of health care professionals and patient/clients as well. Neurofeedback tends to be intimidating to most ordinary people. There are plenty of complex textbooks for professionals some of which I have contributed to. Even the books written for the general public are usually exceedingly complex and focussed very narrowly on what some of us call the high frequency protocols. Dr. soutar has striven to open up to the general public what some call the low frequency or "deep States - meditation/creativity" protocols.
Furthermore, he has done it in a small, easily readable book. It is easy to get ponderously intellectual and complicated about neurofeedback. This is often done by people who do not understand neurofeedback very well and who have no or limited experience either personally or with clients actually working with this scientific art form. Dr. Soutar has an enormous amount of such experience and is a widely respected neurofeedback teacher of mental health professionals. He has a gift for making neurofeedback understandable and practically applicable for professionals and ordinary people as well. I recommend his book to those who want to get a solid insight into both the high frequency and low frequency protocols and why neurofeedback may be one of the greatest breakthroughs in education and mental health in our time. I and many of my colleagues and clients are greatful for this book and look forward to his next effort. R. Adam Crane, BCIA EEG Fellow. Founder of International MindFitness Foundation.
Somewhat disappointing July 20, 2006 Maurice Micklewhite 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
As someone looking for information on the neurofeedback aspect, it was disappointing that this book was only tangentially about brainwave training. The key concept of the book is that early experiences condition our responses, forming an "automatic self" that may not be well adapted to our adult experiences. The process of personal growth is changing this automatic self. To anyone with some knowledge of psychology, this will not be new information, although perhaps for the uninformed there may be some nuggets.
The book also puts some emphasis on spiritual transformation as part of the growth process. Again, if you've read up on meditation and the like, this will be a re-hash. I found it interesting that Soutar labels zen meditation as concentrative. To me, the unfocused, choiceless awareness of zen seems almost the opposite of concentration. However, perhaps the brainwaves tell a different story.
The book does bring together psychology, spirituality, and neurofeedback as integral parts of a complete process of growth. Brainwave training is briefly discussed as a useful adjunct to both psychotherapy as well meditative practice. For those looking for information specifically on neurofeedback, a great introduction is the book "Symphony in the Brain." I suspect the ideal reader for this book would be someone struggling with some problems, and unfamiliar with psychotherapy, meditation and neurofeedback. For such a person the book could be an invaluable pointer towards a new way of life.
Part of the reason for my low rating is that the book is difficult to read in that it lacks the flow and clarity of a natural writer. Additionally it is riddled with spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. If a second edition is in the works, I highly recommend they hire a professional writer.
