Dave Evans knows his own mind. One day, he believes, it will be possible for him to know yours as well.

Evans is chief futurist at the Internet Business Solutions Group, and he has been thinking about thinking - specifically, about telepathy. The notion of transferring information from one brain to another has been a science-fiction stalwart for decades.

But Evans, whose job it is to stay abreast of scientific research and predict where it will lead, believes network telepathy is viable within 50 years. Aged 43 now, he will need to stay healthy to see his prediction come true, but with or without him he is confident it will arrive.

At its most basic, telepathy has three components: gathering information from one brain, transmitting it elsewhere and delivering it to another brain.

''Today there are already examples of being able to read, transport and write to the human brain,'' Evans told the Heraldfrom the headquarters in San Jose, California, of Cisco, the technology giant that is IBSG's parent.

The ability to read signals from a brain is well established. In 2003 a Duke University neuroscientist, Miguel Nicolelis, conducted an experiment in which a monkey initially moved a joystick with its paw to direct a robotic arm to retrieve pieces of fruit. Nicolelis then used electrodes to record the distinct brain waves produced during each of the monkey's actions. Lastly, the joystick was programmed to respond to those electronic patterns.

It is true that science is an ever revolving door of theories. What once was thought science fiction one day becomes science factual the next. Science has answers only for a short period of time, and then the answers change as our knowledge-base expansively grows to new heights.
